Getting Started as a Participant (Technical Requirements)

Please note: not all courses utilise Blackboard Collaborate online classrooms; this guide is not applicable to all students. For information on your classes, such as when they start or if they are recorded, you will need to contact your School or Faculty, as course structures vary across faculties.

Blackboard Collaborate is a 'virtual' classroom, where you can interact with other students and teachers online via audio and video, sharing documents, breaking into small groups and collaborating together. 

This guide explains computer requirements, how to find your Blackboard Collaborate Class and how to watch a recorded class.

To participate, you will need:

Set up your computer in advance

Preferably a day or two in advance of your class, test and set up your device. This needs to be checked again if you use a different computer or apply updates to your computer.

Enter a Test Classroom

If you are using Blackboard Collaborate for the first time, or for the first time on a particular computer, you will need to:

When joining a Blackboard Collaborate session for the first time you will need to follow the prompts to download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.

You should also see a downloaded "Meeting" file, which you need to click and open. You may see a security dialog box asking to confirm the application's digital signature. Click 'Download File' to continue.

If you cannot automatically see and click on the downloaded "meeting" file, open your Downloads folder to locate it and open it.

Once you have entered the test Blackboard Collaborate classroom, complete the 'Audio set up wizard' by pressing the microphone icon in the top left hand-corner of the screen. This will ensure your audio is working. It is recommended that you use a headset with microphone and speakers.

 

Check your internet connection by clicking 'Edit' in the menu bar at the top of the page. Then, select 'Preferences' from the dropdown menu. In the 'Preferences' window, scroll down to "Session > Connection". Click 'Connection'. It is recommended that you set your Connection Speed to one speed lower than what you actually have, or simply set it to "Wireless (300Kbps)".  


Locate your Blackboard Collaborate class

Please make sure you leave enough time to enter your classroom 15 minutes before the session starts for the first time.

There are two ways you may enter a Blackboard Collaborate class:

  1. For most classes, you can find a link to your weekly Blackboard Collaborate class in your online class space. Each class may name their link slightly differently. Usually, you will see "Synchronous Meetings" at the top of the page, or a link to "Tutorials" further down, which you can recognise by this icon:  Once you click your link to Blackboard Collaborate, click "Join Session". 
  2. For other sessions, such as Student Learning Support webinars, you may be sent an email with a link to join your class. If you are attending a Student Learning Support webinar, the link will be in the email confirming your registration.

Regardless of whether your link is in an email or in your online class space, when you click the link, it will open a new window and download a "Meeting" File. You may need to login before it begins downloading the file. 

Simply open the downloaded "Meeting" file to launch the Blackboard Collaborate program.

Please note: it is important to enter at least 5 minutes early so that you can complete the 'Audio setup wizard'. You should complete the audio setup wizard each time your enter a Blackboard Collaborate class.


Watching a recorded class

Recordings of Blackboard Collaborate sessions are available in your online class space on the same page as the 'Join Session' link, as shown below.

Click on the Blackboard icon, Video icon, or Audio icon to play back the recorded session. Note: the Video icon and Audio icon may not appear in all classes.

This also means that your system needs to be compatible (see top of this page).

 

If you clicked on the Blackboard icon, a new window will open and you will notice a file is being downloaded in your web browser. 

Click on the downloaded file to open Blackboard Collaborate to view the recording.
